Dial Up Connection Speed Question:
Technology Questions

At times I get a connection speed of 32kb/s on my dial up. I thought I was paying for 56kb/s.

Laptop

Dial up connection speeds are never a guarantee. When you have a dial up connection you are limited to not only what your modem is able to do, usually 56kb/s, but also what the phone line is capable of as well as how busy the internet is.

56kb/s is actually the maximum theoretical speed but on average you will be lucky to get around the 40kb/s mark.

When you first get on the internet with dial up a window will pop up telling you what the current maximum speed is.

Technology Questions

I have read about defragmenting a hard drive, but I can't seem to find it on my Mac, can I do it?

LaptopThe simple answer is not you can't

Apple Macintosh's operating system, OS X, is different to Windows so it is not always stuck with the same problems as the Microsoft programme has.

The big difference is the way the the programme looks after itself. While Windows is known for breaking up parts of files and storing them randomly on a hard drive OSX is some what more organised and as such doesn't have a major problem with file fragmentation.
