I'm  getting an error message 691 when I'm trying to get onto my internet connection. Have I done something wrong?

Dialup can be a fickle animal in the world of internet connections. Theydrop out easily, they tie up your phone line, it doesn't always giveyou it's maximum speed and they can stop working without warning.

Dueto all the settings for your dial up connection being stored on yourcomputer, sometimes the data involved with getting your computer on theinternet can get corrupted.  Also if your internet service provider ishaving problems you can also have your connection affected.

Error 691 involves an error with the authentication of the connection. This can involve an incorrect user name, password, settings or incorrect security settings.

The easiest way to try and get rid of the error is to retype your username and password into the dial up window. If the retyped details still returns the same error, you should then contact your internet service provider to make sure the details you are typing are exactly correct, including lower and uppercase letters.

If the problem consists, thanks to the Microsoft Knowledge Base , you should follow these steps:

Click Start, point to Connect To, and then click your dial-up connection.

In the Connect dialog box, click Properties.

Click the Security tab.

Under Security options, click Allow unsecured password in the Validate my identity as follows box, and then click OK

If the problem consists still,you can solve the problem by deleting the current dial up connection settings and set up a new connection on the computer.
